What size Vertical Solar Station do I need?Firstly, calculate your daily consumption of electricity. Example: Let's say your daily household consumption is 10kWh. Our Vertical Solar Station | MINI offers 25kWh, so that's more than two days worth of stored energy! The standard Vertical Solar Station offers 30-40kWh, so 3-4 days of additional stored energy! For us, we always say BIGGER is BETTER!
-
How do I find out my current household consumption?Your electricity statement or supplier will have all the answers you need. Or alternatively, if you have a smart meter, it will show you your consumption for days, weeks, months etc
-
What happens if I produce more energy than I consume? All energy produced will go towards supplying your current consumption in the first instance. Any excess energy will be used to charge the batteries. A Vertical Solar Station comes with a 10kW inverter as standard. This will service a high consumption property, meaning less need for switching over to the grid electrical supply, and fewer higher rate tariff units used.
-
How do I know what energy I've generated and used? Each Vertical Solar Station comes with a Victron GX remote monitoring device. This allows communication with the Victron Portal and/or the Victron Connect app. These allow you to access information about your energy production, consumption and battery levels from the comfort of your armchair / bed / sun lounger...
-
How well do the panels perform in summer?Quite well actually... In testing our units have managed a total yield of between 4-5kWh per day on a perfect summer's day. This may well be over half of your daily consumption!
-
How well do the panels perform in Winter?Better than static roof mounted panels, as they are able to harness more of the morning/evening light, and are better placed to capture the direct sunlight when the Sun is angled at its lowest point in the sky... In testing, we've seen daily yields between 0.5-1kWh, depending on weather conditions.
-
Aren't Solar Panels supposed to be angled? That's one way of doing it - find the optimum angle that works well for both the Summer and Winter months, or go with the natural angle of any available roof space. Let's face it, harvesting Solar energy in the summer is not hard. The real challenge comes when the days are short and the Sun stays low in the sky. That's why we use panels on each face of the product - to gather up as much of that limited light as possible, and make the most of low angle, direct Sunlight.
-
How does a Vertical Solar Station save me money?During the day, the Vertical Solar Station creates and stores energy (electricity) harvested from the Sun. At night, it will charge the batteries using cheaper (tariff dependant) rate power. This stored energy then supplies your home with electricity, removing the requirement for the grid to feed your home at peak times. Whilst your electricity is being supplied from a Vertical Solar Station, you are not paying your energy supplier for the usage at all!

Do I need planning permission to install a Vertical Solar StationIn most scenarios, a Vertical Solar Station wouldn't require planning consent. If you are unsure after reading the guide below, then its best to check out the planning portal, or speak to your local planning office. Some council boroughs are now making more exceptions due to the UK Government's focus on green energy . Please see below for a quick guide on planning: All the following conditions must be observed: Stand-alone solar equipment should be sited, so far as is practicable, to minimise its effect on the amenity of the area When no longer needed equipment should be removed as soon as reasonably practicable. All the following limits must be met: Only the first stand alone solar installation will be permitted development. Further installations will require planning permission. No part of the installation should be higher than four metres The installation should be at least 5m from the boundary of the property The size of the array should be no more that 9 square metres or 3m wide by 3m deep Panels should not be installed within boundary of a listed building or a scheduled monument. if your property is in a conservation area, or in a World Heritage Site, no part of the solar installation should be nearer to any highway bounding the house than the part of the house that is nearest to that highway. Note - If you are a leaseholder you may need to get permission from your landlord, freeholder or management company.
-
Do I need to notify my electricity supplier? You will almost certainly want to see what off-peak or cheap-rate tariffs your supplier offers and make the switch. Your DNO (Distribution Network Operator) will need to be notified of the installation under the terms of G99 approval. This should generally be a fairly simple process and will be carried out by our installer, with your permission, prior to installation taking place.
-
How much space is required around a Vertical Solar Station for installation? We ask that your Vertical Solar Station is positioned with the front and tops facing outward and not obstructed. The back can be within 50cm of a light coloured wall or fence. In testing we have found the panels still function well if against a light reflecting surface.
-
What type of surface can a Vertical Solar Station stand on?A Vertical Solar Station needs a flat solid fire retardant surface sized at least 1520mm x 820mm or 1600mm x 780 (BEEF version). There will also be a requirement to drive an earthing rod into the ground directly below the location of the Cabinet.
-
What access do you require to install a Vertical Solar Station? The Vertical Solar Stations are delivered flat-packed and assembled on-site. This minimises any delivery or access requirements, and the biggest single part is about the size of an average fence panel. For connecting the electrical side of things, our installer will require access to your main fuse board and consumer unit.
-
What if I have a current Solar installation, can I add this?Yes. With a Vertical Solar Station, there is an option to add one or two solar panel charge controllers. These can take a feed from your existing PV array.
-
Should my Vertical Solar Station face South? It is definitely beneficial if one of the two larger sides has an un-obstructed view facing south, however we have cabinets facing West with a hedge on their East side - and still see some great results!
-
Do you connect the cabinet to my mains electricity supply?Yes we do. However, feel assured this work is carried out by a qualified electrician after the Vertical Solar Station is located. We try our upmost to do this the same day. That way we leave you with a shiny new and fully working Vertical Solar Station.
-
Can I charge my car from a Vertical Solar Station? We advise against charging your car from a Vertical Solar Station, and a dedicated EV charger is much better suited to the task. Most people charge their car overnight on the lower tariff. We suggest this is still the most efficient way to charge your electric car.
-
Can I relocate my Vertical Solar Station if I need to?Yes! This is one major advantage of a Vertical Solar Station. With a roof mounted installation you add around £1500 to the value of your home, losing the rest of your investment when you move home. With a Vertical Solar Station, you can relocate it to your new home. If this is something you need to take advantage of, contact us and we can point you in the right direction.
-
Can I have more than one Vertical Solar Station? If you require more production or storage. please contact us about our custom options and we will be able to advise on whats best suited for your particular circumstances.
-
How do I use the app? Many of the components we use are Victron. This includes the Victron Globalink which allows communication with the Victron Portal. During installation we will support you with the initial setup. The Victron Portal can be accessed through their web page: https://vrm.victronenergy.com/ You can also download the Victron App for your device: Google Play store Apple App Store

-
Is a Vertical Solar Station built from recyclable materials? As much as possible, we design our products to be recyclable once they reach their end-of-life and where we can, we try to use the most environmentally friendly materials for assembly. This is constantly changing as and when we are able to make advances in this area.

How do I clean the solar panels on the Solar Grid Hybrid Cabinet? It's best to routinely clean your solar cabinet panels. This will keep them functioning to the best of their ability at all times. You can use a hosepipe and a soft bristle brush. You can even ask your Window Cleaner if they use a pure water system. Please avoid any chemicals and never pressure wash the panels.
